As a solution to the labor shortage businesses were facing in 2021 and 2022, we looked into utilizing an untapped community who were hoping to find employment through a Second Chance Hiring program. These individuals had a criminal past that would most likely make them ineligible for a job due to background checks. We began partnering with Pinellas Ex-offender Re-entry Coalition (PERC) for an On-the-Job Training (OJT) program to prepare this population for work. The program was a success out of the gate.
TSE was the first company in the region to offer such an opportunity for this disenfranchised group of individuals so it naturally brought publicity to our PERC partnership.
TSE was contacted by Florida State University and the Institute for Justice Research and Development about being included in a documentary-style corporate training video on Second Chance Hiring. We said yes, and during the summer the documentary was filmed, edited, and in October it was released.
The film, funded by J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., is an opportunity for TSE to share what we do as a company and the successes we have had with retaining talent through our On-the-Job Training program and the hiring of Second Chance candidates through our partnership with PERC. The video is narrated by host John Koufos, who is the National Director of Reentry Initiatives at Right on Crime and the Executive Director of Safe Streets and Second Chances. Retaining Talent takes a look at Florida, where TSE is headquartered, Washington, D.C., its law enforcement and corrections there, and businesses that hire individuals with a record. The program shows that Second Chance Hiring can indeed be profitable, too.
We hope you will watch it and consider starting your own program with candidates who are looking for a Second Chance.
